Andy Peterson has been surrounded by music since a young age. His father was a musician, and there was commonly jazz, classical, and funk music playing in the house. This influence was a big part of his development as a young musician. Andy has played the saxophone for 12 years, and has been teaching and performing for the past few years. Andy graduated with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Jazz Studies from University of Minnesota - Duluth in 2022.
Andy’s playstyle is rooted in the tradition of bebop, with a modern taste. He makes a point to be creative, while simultaneously paying respect to the masters. Andy’s biggest influences are Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane, and Joe Lovano. It was Dexter Gordon’s sound that made him fall in love with the tenor saxophone. Andy has played in a variety of settings, including big bands, small combos, rock bands, and other popular styles, making him a well equipped player for almost any setting. He has played at venues including the Dakota Jazz Club, Jazz Central Studios, Sacred Heart Music Center, and many more. He was an Honorable Mention in the Internationally known Vandoren Emerging Artist Competition for the year of 2022. Andy has studied with Marcus Strickland, Ryan Frane, Ted Schoen, Geoff Senn, Joe Mayo, and Scott Johnson.
